Auto lifters stole vehicles on demand from Delhi, sold them in UP, Kashmir

Police said the gang used to sell the stolen vehicles in places such as Jammu and Kashmir and various parts of Uttar Pradesh after dismantling them.

An interstate gang of vehicle thieves who used to steal cars on demand operating has been busted in the national capital region.

Five members of the syndicate were arrested and 25 stolen vehicles, including 11 cars, were recovered from them, police said on Thursday.

Police said the gang used to sell the stolen vehicles in places such as Jammu and Kashmir and various parts of Uttar Pradesh after dismantling them.

A senior police officer said the arrested men said they operated with a unique modus operandi. On receiving a demand for a vehicle of specific make and model, the thieves used to carry out a recce in Delhi-NCR and identify their targets.

“The auto-lifters used a specially designed screwdriver like tool to break open the lock of the car. They would use master keys to start the car and flee within seconds,” said the officer. The stolen cars were delivered to receivers in Srinagar in J&K and western districts of Uttar Pradesh such as Sambhal, Moradabad, Amroha and Bijnor.

The thieves used to prepare fake documents of the stolen vehicles to avoid detection by police enroute to these places. “Women were hired to escort the driver and masquerade as family members to avoid attention at border check points,” said the officer adding the vehicles were further sold as second hand vehicles in these cities.

Several high-end vehicles such as Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Creta, and Mahindra Scorpio have been stolen and sold in grey markets by the arrested men, said police.
