The veteran actor wants freedom of Deepika respected.
Haasan’s comment came in response to an inflammatory announcement from Haryana BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu on Sunday, who offered a bounty of Rs 10 crore to anyone beheading Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone for being part of the film ‘Padmavati’.
Several sections of the Rajput community believe director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has distorted history in the film which happens to be about a fictional queen called Padmini. They believe, not having seen the film, that he has disrespected this fictional queen.
Haasan said that “extremism in any debate was deplorable” and added that Padukone’s head, body and her freedom deserve respect. He urged Indians to “wake up” and “think” instead of supporting those who curb artistic and creative freedoms.
Politicians across party lines have demanded a ban on the film, which was slated for release on December 1. The release has now been deferred by its makers.
