NEW DELHI: BCCI’s current power brokers aren’t the only ones forced to take note of the Indian team’s cramped international schedule ahead of the big away tour to South Africa. Following Virat Kohli’s strident complaints about the packed calendar, the board’s curators and groundsmen – jolted by the captain’s gentle diktat to ‘replicate’ South African conditions against a wobbly Sri Lankan side – have been rushing to give home pitches the ‘green’ treatment.

Lost in the scramble has been the fact that such ‘surrogate pitches’ necessitate altering the characteristics of the 22-yard strip at any particular ground – whether more, or less, will depend on the venue – and can be arduous to produce in such double-quick time.
