Neighbourhood News Desk/Avi Arya: Supreme Court has made it very clear that a high powered committee is being set up for looking into the solid waste management problem that is occurring in Delhi. They will be meeting every day for two weeks in order to work out in dealing with garbage disposal.
The bench which is also led by Justice MB Lokur has also told additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand to not nominate the top officials that are coming from civic agencies such as committee members because their prior commitments wouldn’t permit them to attend daily meetings.
Justice Lokur said “The chairperson of NDMC or the chairman of SDMC will not be able to attend the meetings. You must appoint someone who is a rank lower”. The judge said “It has to be a continuous exercise for two weeks and we shall take up the matter again. If we feel the committee needs an extension, we will issue orders accordingly”.
Anand informed the bench that the committee had once held a meeting and has planned to meet twice a week. However, the bench insisted that the committee must meet every day. It even asked her to nominate five people from the civil society as panel members.
Names were even suggested by senior counsel Colin Gonsalves, who assists the court in the case that is related to garbage management. The court will hear this matter once again on August 31st.
