Neighbourhood News Desk/Avi Arya: Due to the both the physical and mental risks of over drinking and the safety of the public, Delhi Government had stated that all liquor vends must deploy an appropriate number of guards in order to help curb open drinking near the outlets.

Through these written directions, the department had instructed the liquor vends that if any person is found consuming liquor around the stand, the local police station must be contacted immediately.

The department also requested that these establishments should install CCTV cameras that capture footage within 50 meters. Punishments for liquor consumption in a public place are either by fine or through imprisonment provided under Rule 65 of the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010.

These directions were issued by Assistant Commissioner J.P Singh after a review. A similar drive was also announced last month, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the consumption of alcohol in the open, particularly near liquor vends and in vehicles, is not merely a safety hazard but a major problem for women safety in the national capital.
