Diphtheria death toll rises in Delhi


Neighbourhood News Desk/Avi Arya: Tragedy has struck Delhi due to the fact 19 children have just died from diphtheria at a municipal hospital in north-west Delhi while one child died at the Delhi government-run Lok Nayak Hospital, resulting in the death toll to 20.

This report was issued by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that is contagious and affects the mucus membranes of both the throat and the nose.

A senior North civic body official said, “From September 6-24, there have been 157 admissions, of which 128 were from UP. Rest of the cases are from Haryana and Delhi”.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the hospital and has asked to file a report on the reasons for the deaths and its stock of vaccines by September 26.
