When it comes to Delhi’s pavements, if one is able to walk normally then there’s no problem no matter how difficult or patchy they are. Unfortunately, those with disabilities should avoid them for the best.
More difficulties are being added for the disabled people, while accessing road infrastructure in Delhi such as, uneven pavements surface, broken ramps etc. Disability rights activists complain that accessible infrastructure isn’t just for people with disabilities but also for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with a medical condition or a temporary disability.
Government agencies such as public works department (PWD), that are responsible for the maintaining the road infrastructure, provide connected paths, ramps on either side of the pavements, and handrails to assist the disabled people. But unfortunately the infrastructure isn’t developed like the street design guidelines.
